About Us
We believe when people and organizations come together, we can make real, lasting changes.
1 Mississippi was established in 2009 by the Mississippi River Network (MNR) to organize people dedicated to protecting the Mississippi River into a national constituency of River Citizens. River Citizens live in all 50 states, take simple actions to improve the River and advocate for River protections to local and national decision makers.
MRN created the 1 Mississippi program to encourage River Citizens to act through education, inspiration, and opportunities to embrace and advocate for the Mississippi River. MRN is a coalition of 56 nonprofit organizations and businesses working together to protect the land, water, wildlife, and people of the United States’ greatest River.
The Mississippi River Network and the 1 Mississippi program are brought to you by the Walton Family Foundation and the McKnight Foundation.

The Mississippi River Network
1 Mississippi program is implemented by the Mississippi River Network (MRN) to encourage River Citizens to take action through education, inspiration, and opportunities to embrace and advocate for the Mississippi River.
The Mississippi River Network is a coalition of 56 organizations working toward a healthy and resilient River for the land, water, wildlife, and people of the United States’ greatest River. Founded in 2005, the Network has grown into a diverse coalition of nonprofit organizations and businesses from the River’s headwaters in Minnesota, to where it drains into the Gulf of Mexico. Network members share resources, implement whole River strategies, and support the 1 Mississippi national program.
The Network focuses on three priority issues that need River-wide cooperation:
- Establish a national commitment to protect and restore the Mississippi River through increased public awareness and support.
- Promote sustainable agricultural practices throughout the Mississippi River Basin.
- Encourage reliance on natural infrastructure and restoration of wetlands and flood plains.
